Nel 1983, la MGM firmò un contratto con Arthur C. Clarke per lo sfruttamento dei diritti cinematografici di 2010: Odyssey Two, il romanzo sequel di 2001: Odissea nello spazio, uscito contemporaneamente al celebre film del 1968 diretto da Stanley Kubrick.
Kubrick dichiarò subito di "non essere interessato". Tuttavia, il regista Peter Hyams mostrò interesse e contattò sia Clarke che Kubrick per ottenere la loro approvazione. Entrambi si mostrarono favorevoli, e Hyams iniziò a lavorare con Arthur C. Clarke all'adattamento del romanzo, che sarebbe diventato 2010: L'anno del contatto.
In un primo momento, Hyams, affascinato da Sean Young (che aveva interpretato la replicante Rachel nel celebre Blade Runner di Ridley Scott, uscito l'anno precedente), pensò di affidarle il ruolo principale nonostante il personaggio fosse originariamente maschile (che fu poi interpretato da Roy Scheider per continuità con il film precedente).
Alcuni dei set del film di Kubrick erano ancora presenti negli studi MGM, e Peter Hyams poté lavorare alla sceneggiatura definitiva mentre conduceva i casting e aggiornava le scenografie per il nuovo film. Si dice che il regista tenne Sean Young per diversi giorni ai Soundstages Studios della MGM a Culver City, in California, facendole provare vari costumi, acconciature e luci, e persino girando brevi sequenze di prova, mai utilizzate e che, secondo alcune fonti recenti, sarebbero andate perdute in un incendio.
Le immagini di questa galleria sono tutte inedite: alcune dietro le quinte in cui Hyams accompagna personalmente Sean Young sul set, alcuni fotogrammi dell'attrice durante i test con diverse tute spaziali e altri scatti da prove costume. Ci sono anche alcune Polaroid dei test trucco e capelli: si dice che proprio questi test spinsero la MGM a rifiutare Sean Young, poiché risultava troppo riconoscibile dopo l'uscita recente di Blade Runner.
Infine, sono presenti anche immagini assolutamente inedite di Sean Young sul set di Blade Runner.

In 1983, MGM signed a contract with Arthur C. Clarke for the exploitation of the film rights to -2010: Odyssey Two-, the sequel novel to -2001: A Space Odyssey-, released simultaneously with the 1968 film of the same name by Stanley Kubrick.
Kubrick immediately expressed that he was -not interested-. However, the director Peter Hyams was interested and contacted both Clarke and Kubrick for their blessings. Both were favorable, and Peter Hyams began working with Arthur C. Clarke on adapting the novel, which would become -2010: The Year We Make Contact-.
Initially, Hyams, enchanted by Sean Young, (who played the -replicant- Rachel in the famous film Blade Runner, directed by Ridley Scott and released the previous year), considered casting her in the leading role even though her role was intended for a man, (later played by Roy Scheider in continuity with the previous film).
Some of the sets from Kubrick's film were still at MGM studios, and Peter Hyams was able to work on the final script while also conducting castings and updating the sets for the new film. It is said that the director kept Sean Young at the MGM Soundstages in Culver City, California, for days, testing various possible costumes, hairstyles, and lighting, and even filming short sequences for tests that were never used and recently reportedly lost in a fire.
The images of this gallery are all unpublished images: some behind-the-scenes photos where Hyams personally escort Sean Young on set, some frames of the actress during test shoots in different space suits, and some frames from other costume tests. There are also some Polaroids of makeup and hair tests: it is said that these tests were the reason MGM refused to use Sean Young, as she was too recognizable due to the recently released film.
Last but not least, there are absolutely unpublished images of Sean Young on the set of Blade Runner.
